9U Cal Ripken 2005 All Star Highlights

7/29/05  Queensbury 7, North Colonie 6

The NC 9's lost a heartbreaker to Queensbury in the Championship game of the State Tourney. In one of the more exciting games you'll ever see by 9 year olds, a triple with a runner on first in the bottom of the 6th by the Q's ended the game.

On the hill:
    Sean Egan
    Brandan Safford

Sticks:
    Rydog: 1 hit
    Z: 2 BB
    Sean: 3 hits
    Nick: 2 hits
    Ryan C: 2 hits
    Matt P: 1 hit
    Russ B: 1 hit, 1 BB
    Deano: 1 BB

Great run by the boys! Keep your heads up!!

7/28/05  Queensbury 9, North Colonie 6

The first game of the Championship round saw the NC 9's come out flat. Suspect defense gave Queensbury a quick 3-0 lead in the first. Quality at bats in the 2nd and 3rd innings gave the NC 9's leads of 5-3 and 6-5 respectively. But these leads were short lived as the Q's fought back themselves to gain the 'W'.

On the hill:
    Sean Egan
    Justin Safford
    Z Zappone

Lumber:
    Rydog: 1 hit, 1 BB
    Z: 1 hit

7/25/05  North Colonie 14, Queensbury 4

Facing a team (Queensbury) we were unfamiliar with, fans, parents, siblings, other relatives, and coaches did not know what to expect. The NC 9's, however, said 'it's game time'!

Just as the home plate umpire yelled, 'Play Ball', it seemed the NC 9's were up 7-0 in the first inning. The first 9 batters reached base safely on 7 hits, a walk, and an error. The bats didn't slow down all game as it was 14-0 after 3 innings. A shortened 4 inning game was in hand as a force out at 2nd base to end the game squashed the rally Queensbury was attempting.

Arms:
Sean Egan, Brandan Safford, and Justin Safford kept the Queensbury sluggers at bay and off the basepaths.

Lumber:
    Rydog: 1 hit, 1 BB
    Z: 2 hits
    Sean: 2 hits
    The Stick: 2 hits
    B-Saf: 2 hits
    R-Cal: 2 hits
    Manny: 1 hit
    J-Saf: 1 hit
    Alex: 1 hit

7/23/05  North Colonie 15, Niskayuna Red 5

After finishing the first game of the Tourney strong, the NC 9's said 'why stop there'? As Ernie Banks once said, 'Let's play two!'

A 2 hour break in between games did nothing to slow the momentum. 2 quick runs in the first and 4 more in the second gave us a 6-2 lead. A defense that had trouble in the first 2 innings of the first game, suddenly looked like the Doomsday Defense of the 1970's! An errorless game had the scoreboard reading 15-5 after 5 innings and another shortened game was in hand.

On the hill: Sean Egan, Justin Safford , and Matt Zappone kept the Nisky bats in check.

Big sticks:
    Rydog - 1 hit, 1 BB
    Z - 2 hits, 1 HP
    Sean - 1 hit, 1 BB
    The Stick - 1 hit

    Manny - 1 hit
    Deano - 1 hit
    T-Pot - 1 BB

7/22-23/05  North Colonie 18, Clifton Park 8

The first game of the State Tourney that's being held in Niskayuna proved to be an interesting game. It took 2 days to complete.

Friday's opening game saw the NC 9's take a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Apparently, the NC 9's forgot that not only do teams bat while playing the game of baseball, they also have to field. Displaying a defense that Bill Buckner would have been proud of, the NC's gave back a quick 3 runs.

In the top of the second, the NC 9's decided that 2 runs just wasn't their style and decided to put a 7 spot on the scoreboard sending 11 batters to the plate to take a very comfortable 9-3 lead into the bottom of the 2nd. Again, the defense was suspect as we let Clifton Park score 2 more runs and gave them a runner at second with no outs. Just at that point, the NC 9's found lightning! Not in their bats, not with their gloves, but in the sky! Game postponed until Saturday morning!

A good night's rest was just what the Doctor ordered as the 9-5 lead was turned into a 4 inning 18-8 mercy Saturday morning! We're not sure if it was the 9 hours of sleep, the 137 sugar filled donuts that the kids consumed that morning, or the Ernie Banks 'let's play 2' mentality by the kids that brought out their best baseball, but whatever it was - they put it all together to finish the game strong!

On the hill: Sean Egan and Brandan Safford combined to allow only 3 hits.

The lumber yard produced the following:

    Rydog - 1 hit, 1 BB
    Z - 1 HP
    Sean - 1 hit, 3 BB
    Nick - 3 BB
    Brandan - 1 BB
    Ryan C -2 hits, 1 BB
    Manny - 1 hit, 1 BB
    Justin - 1 hit
    Deano - 1 hit, 1 HP
    Matty P - 1 BB

The NC 9's had no time to rest as the early morning victory pushed them to play Nisky Red at noon.

7/17/05  North Colonie 6, Amsterdam 0  (by forfeit)

That makes the NC 9’s the Eastern NY Cal Ripken Central Division 9 Year Old Champs!

7/15/05  North Colonie 1, Nisky Red 0

In what turned out to be a 1-0 pitchers/defensive classic, the NC 9's showed we can win not only with our bats but also with good pitching and defense as we improved to 7-1.

Sean 'D-Train' Egan and Justin 'J-Saf' Safford held the Nisky bats to 2 hits over 6 innings.

Nice defense by Vinny Polsinello who threw out a potential runner at the plate from RF. Also contributing with the leather were: Rydog, Z, Ryan C, D-Train, & J-Saf.

Big Sticks: Z, Nick the Stick, Ryan C, T-Pot (who also scored the games only run), and J-Saf.

Next up for the NC 9's is the Eastern New York State Cal Tourney that's being held in Niskayuna beginning 7/22.

Tune into the YES channel tonight at 8:00 for a replay of this classic!

7/12/05  North Colonie 31, Nisky Gray 1

After losing a 9-2 lead the previous night and having experienced their first loss of the season, the NC 9's said that will not happen again and we need to make a statement to the world! A statement was made in a 31-1 game that lasted only 4 innings.

There's not enough room to write in all of the offensive hi-lights but with only 2 K's at the plate, it is obvious that the NC 9's pounded the ball all night long! If not for a few stellar defensive plays by Nisky Gray, another touchdown may have been added to the scoreboard!

Big Sticks:
    Rydog
    Z
    Eags
    Nick the Stick
    B-Saff
    R-Cal
    J-Saff
    T-Pot

7/11/05  Nisky Red 13, North Colonie 10

The NC 9's took it on the chin last night against a very determined Nisky Red Team. NC was up 9-2 when the flood gates (a.k.a. defense) broke. When the water settled, the score read Nisky Red 13, NC 10.

Hit parade:
    Rydog-3
    Z-2
    Nick the Stick-2
    B-Saf-3
    J-Saf-1
    sean-1

7/7/05  North Colonie 20, Amsterdam 6

The NC 9's kept the heat on the other Central Division teams by winning their 5th straight game without a loss Thursday night in Amsterdam.

On the hill: Sean Egan, Ryan Callister, & Justin Safford threw a combined 5 innings, allowing 0 runs.

The Wheaties that everyone ate for breakfast paid off at the plate as the NC bats produced 18 hits: Rydog O'Hagan(2), Z(2), Sean Egan(2), Nick Gavin(4), Brandan Safford(3), Ryan Callister(1), Justin Safford(2), T-Pot(2).

7/5/05  North Colonie 6, Nisky Gray 0  - Win by forfeit

7/2/05  North Colonie 13, Nisky Red 2

Mother Nature decided to get into the action Friday night by making playing conditions nowhere to be found. Instead, an extra night of rest brought out the best for the NC 9's.

Sean Egan held Nisky Red in check for 4 innings of 2 run ball while Brandan Safford closed out the final 2 innings in Mariano Rivera like fashion.

The NC sticks kept the pressure on the Nisky Hurlers. Matt Polsinello broke open a tight game with run scoring singles in both the 2nd & 3rd innings.

Lumber:
    Matt Polsinello(2)
    B-Saf(1)
    Z(1)
    J-Saf(1)
    Sean Egan(1)
    Nick Gavin(2)

Great game by the entire team!

6/30/05  North Colonie 11, Nisky Gray 6

The NC 9's improved to 2-0 behind some solid pitching by Justin Safford, Rydog O'Hagan, Z Zappone, & Nick Gavin.  J-Saf threw 3 shutout innings of no-hit ball.   Rydog came in to throw 1 shutout inning with 3 K's.  Nice defensive work by the entire team as many plays were made!

The lumber yard continued to pound out hits:
    Rydog (2),
    Z (3),
    Sean (3),
    B-Saf (1),
    R-Cal (1),
    J-Saf (1),
    Manny Bird (1).

Some nice defensive plays by Nisky Gray prevented a few more from entering the hit column.

Good all around game!

6/28/05  North Colonie 20, Amsterdam 0

In our first game, opening night jitters were non-existent as the North Colonie Cal 9's came out of the gate fast and furious. Sean Egan threw 2 perfect innings and with help from Ryan Callister and Brandan Safford shut down Amsterdam. At the plate, Sean Egan again led the way with 2 triples and a home run. Matt 'Z' Zappone also had 3 hits to lead the offense. Ryan O'Hagan, Nick Gavin, Brandan Safford, and Ryan Callister all contributed with 2 hits. Justin Safford added a single and Russell 'Manny' Bird had a sacrifice fly.

10U Cal Ripken 2005 All Star Highlights

Game 10
          North Colonie - 3       Queensbury - 4

This was it folks,  winner take all for the NYS District 14 Championship.  After losing to Queensbury in Game 9, NC needed this victory to advance to the Mid-Atlantic in New Jersey.  The Boght boys jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of two in what looked to be setting up for a down to the wire battle of the wills.  Back and forth defensive exchanges kept each teams bats in check until the bottom of the fifth, when Queensbury was able to go ahead, 4-3.  The top of the sixth came and went with NC unable to capitalize, ending the Bulldogs strong run and hopes for advancement.  All in all, it was a good season - the boys should be proud of their ability to achieve a record of 7-3 overall, against the best of the best in the Northeast.

From the mound
Ted Cillis opened up and pitched the first two, Dan Ciaramella came in and went for three and Zach Yakel came in for the close.

Highlights from the lumber yard
The fewest hits in any game played, our bats were tired:

    Kevin Bilynsky             Single
    Ryan Paulsen              Single
    Eric Egan                    Double
    Dan Ciaramella            Double
    Kevin Watson              Double

Game 9          North Colonie - 6       Queensbury - 12

Blame it on "new digs - or errors - or the heat - or plain old superstition.  After losing every coin toss going into Game 9 and having to be the "Visitor" squad, Coach Cillis finally caught "heads" on the flip and drew the "Home" dugout.  Our players did not see the field the same way from that side of the park.  After two innings of play, we were down 6-0 with only (1) hit versus Queensbury's (5).  A come from behind rally was needed ASAP and the Boght boys stepped it up in the 3rd and 4th to whittle the lead down to a 6-3 ballgame.  Queensbury, smelling the smoke coming from not only the bats of the NC players, but also from the ears of the NC coaching staff set-out to fight fire with fire, unleashing the lumber in a bat-a-round 5th inning flurry that tallied six more runs and put the score at 12-6, where it remained through the 6th for an NC loss.  After the numbers were tallied, NC was found to leave (13) men on base, a stat will never win you games.  Cold bats from the boys were the only difference in this game, as defensively there were only (4) errors in six innings for NC.

From the mound
Zach Yakel and Kyle Soldani in a mirror image outing.  Each pitched three innings for the NC Bulldogs.

Highlights from the lumber yard
The action was relatively flat for this usually strong plate squad:

    Kevin Bilynsky             Single
    Ryan Paulsen              (2) Singles
    Eric Egan                    Double, Single
    Dan Ciaramella            Single
    Ryan Griffin                 Double
    Ted Cillis                    Single
    Zach Yakel                 Single

Game 8          North Colonie - 6       Queensbury - 1

The Boght Boys of summer keep rolling along - on a winning streak of (7) games now.  Facing the undefeated Queensbury squad was a challenge we proved to be up for.  Defense was the key to the victory here, as the hot bats of Queensbury, who hit literaly hit every strike the Griff threw at them, was turned back in equal fashion by the tight webbed gloves of the NC squad.  Fifteen bats put the ball in play for Queensbury but resulted in only (2) hits, as the Boght boys vacuumed up the ball wherever it dropped and made clean plays all around.  Impressive put outs at the plate came twice off of a bases loaded situation, showing the efforts of the boys to deny the lead runner in every situation.  In the bottom of the 6th, with bases loaded and a light rain falling, Kyle Soldani came in to sew it up with a two-pitch series that ended the game.  Situation: Bases loaded, 1 out, NC ahead 6-1:  Soldani relieves Griff who has now thrown through all 5 innings (two of which were rain) - first pitch, a sizzler to waiting glove of Zach Yakel who brings a frozen rope to the waiting glove of Ted Cillis to deny the run - IN TIME.  Second pitch, a liner with the looks of "damage done" written all over it through the gap of first and second - but Kevin Bilynsky says "not this time" and pulls the web closed to mitt the final out of a very exciting game.

From the mound
Ryan Griffin went five and a third under high winds and occassional rain in a situation where a strike pitched resulted in a defensive play.  Every boy from Queensbury put the ball in play - but the defense backed up the Griff in style.  Kyle Soldani came in with bases loaded and threw just (2) heaters for a nice close in a tough situation.

Highlights from the lumber yard
The action at the plate was FANtastic, we gave them a lot to cheer about:

Kevin Bilynsky              Double (if the grass wasn't like a hayfield - triple all day)
    Ethan Hausamann        Single
    Ryan Paulsen              Single
    Forrest Scaringe          Single
    Eric Egan                    Single
    CJ Landers                  Double
    Dan Ciaramella            Single
    Ryan Griffin                 Single
    Kyle Soldani                Single
    Ted Cillis                    (2) Singles
    Zach Yakel                 (2) Singles

Dan Ciaramella with a very nice hustle-in-to-grab a blooper just off the plate from third

Forrest Scaringe getting underneath a high flyer to left

Kyle Soldani gloving a foul ball at the fence from short for the out

Game 7          North Colonie - 13       East Fishkill - 11

The games get harder as the tournament advances.  An aggressive bat attack from the East Fishkill dugout put the Boght Boys of NC behind after (3) full innings with a score of 8-6.  Realizing it was now or never, the Boys sparked the fuse and lit up the bases and their bats, scoring seven additional runs in the 5th & 6th innings to pull ahead 13-8.  East Fishkill, with their own ideas of advancing, battled back to within (2) runs at the bottom of the sixth.  With rally mode in high gear, Fishkill had two men in scoring position, when a hard-line drive to centerfield by Laffin was gloved off a bounce by Ryan Griffin - The Griff was able to muster the throw to the plate - IN TIME - to a waiting Ted Cillis who took a hard one for the team off a headfirst slide by Fishkill's Fusco - but was able to recuperate quick enough to pick up the loose ball and make the tag, ending the game in a memorable moment.

From the mound
Kyle Soldani opened game seven bringing the heat acroos in fashion, (2) textbook change-ups had not only the batter but the plate ump scratching their heads.......Kevin Bilynsky came in after the Fishkill bats got redhot to finish this the job and he did it in the style of Travolta on the dance floor.  Cool under pressure, Kevin stepped up his game and closed this one out for the (W).

Kyle Soldani, playing out of the norm at second base, pulled in a short flyer for one out - as well as picked up first base on a dribbler to get the runner -IN TIME.

Game 6          North Colonie - 13       Clifton Park - 2

The nicely groomed fields of the Beacon, NY - Little League Complex - were the host site for the New York State 10 Year Old Cal Tournament, which began today (7/9).  Number one ranked NC Red (aka The Boght Bulldogs), coming off a four game win streak out of the Niskyuna Central Tournament were facing Clifton Park, the runners-up out of the North, in what looked to be a game full of action packed innings from start to finish.  However, a cold start for the NC Bulldogs found them behind, in a deficit score of 2-0 after the first two innings of play.  A quick review of the scorebook revealed the problem, Clifton Park was also ahead with bat contact, registering 5 hits vs. 0 for NC.  It was time to get busy at the plate and agressive on the bags if we were to advance in the winners bracket and that is exactly what we did.  Teamwork and determination were the driving forces that propelled the North Colonie squad in the final four innings, enabling the Bulldogs to register (13) runs on (13) hits to close this one out.  The highlight inning of the game was an (8) hit, (8) run bat-around at the top of the sixth.  An excellent effort all around defensively denied any significant advancement on the bases by Clifton Park, holding them to the (2) runs scored early on.  Zach Yakel pitched the complete (1BB) game win for NC.

Game 5          North Colonie - 9        Niskayuna - 3

The Boght Hills Bulldogs broke loose with a bat-around 3rd inning, putting (9) runs on the board off of seven hits, to bring home the championship trophies in the 10 Year Old Cal Central Division Tournament held at the Blatnick Park in Niskyuana.  Ryan Griffin hurled 4 innings for NC holding the Niskyuana squad to just three runs on three hits.  Kyle Soldani came in as relief and brought the heat to sew up the victory while demonstrating how proper form on the mound not only protects the pitcher but also saves extra bases.   Situation: (2 and 2 count, bottom of the fifth with two men on & two outs) - Webber of Nisky drives a Soldani fastball right back at'm, Soldani's quick glove and finish in the "ready position" allows him not only to glove the third out - but save an up the middle liner that would've cleared the bags and changed the momentum of the game, an excellent play which will not soon be forgotten.  Other webgems worth a mention: Kevin Bilinsky showing that giving 110% of sheer determination can get you there when needed.  Kevin gloved a for-sure drop in fly ball over second base that silenced the Nisky dugout in disbelief - how did he get there in time????  we only know that he did !!!  And Zach Yakel pulled one in from short that was destined to drop in behind third base - but a good read off the bat and sprinter speed denied the batter his due. This game had many highs and a few lows, it was a championship game loaded with action for every fans enjoyment.

It's off to Beacon for the Boght Boys, looking to advance to the next round of play.

The Boght boys were ready for action in this "go the distance" outing at Niskayuna.  The hot bats of Ted Cillis (3 clutch singles) and Eric Eagan (single, triple) combined for five of NC's 8 hits.  The NC gloves provided a nice support system on the defensive end to fend off the pesky Niskayuna line-up as Zach Yakel (6K's, 1BB) went the distance from the mound for NC.

Game 3          North Colonie - 16     Amsterdam - 2

Deja Vu.  A repeat performance for the NC squad in what turned out to be a slugfest from the Boght Boys lumber yard.  If it was close, we were swinging and the numbers speak for themselves, 16 runs on 14 hits kept the action lively and the runners moving.  The pitching squad (Kyle Soldani, Ryan Griffin, Dan Ciaramella) backed up the bats and brought the heat, posting 11 K's all tolled, quieting the Amsterdam bats to just 5 hits.

Game 2      North Colonie - 16     Westland Hills - 1

What a difference a day makes.  Rested and ready to go, the NC bats came alive in this outing as the squad scored 16 runs on 10 hits.  A nice mound effort by Zach Yakel (3 innings - 6 K's) and a one inning 2K closeout by Kevin Bilinsky shortened this one up to a four inning mercy rule.  Excellent efforts running the bags added to the mix as NC proved to hot for the Hills gang to handle.

July 31 vs. Mt. Laurel, NJ
North Colonie’s season can to an end after a 10-9, extra inning loss to Mt. Laurel. McCoy Bean who had 3 hits including a long home run led the NC offense, which was on fire the entire time in Delaware. Derek Gardella had 2 hits, including a long home run. Drew Lasky and Brendan DalCol each had 2 hits. Steve Basile, Paul Englert, Kyle Van Vleet, Sam Hyatt and Trevor LaCosse each had 1 hit.

MTL     1       0       2       0       6       0       1       10      16      3

This marks the end of the little league careers for the 12-year-old Cal Ripken players. This group of players is indeed special. They are 3-time state champions at the 10, 11 and 12 year old level. A remarkable accomplishment!

The 2005 team was very special. Left for dead after a second place finish in the area tournament and a first game loss in the state tournament, the 12’s reeled off 6 consecutive wins, including a doubleheader sweep against Clifton Park to claim the state crown. They advanced to regional play and won their first game before losing 2 heartbreakers to end the season, both of which were so close, they could taste victory.

I want to send a special thank you to all the parents and families of each player. You came together and cheered, supported and encouraged and are really the secret to the team’s success (special thanks to Chef Lasky and his support crew). An extra special thanks to Coaches Gardella, Hyatt and Snyder - without you guys, we go nowhere.

Lastly - congratulations to each and every one of my talented ballplayers. Your achievements on the baseball fields have been remarkable and it has been a special and rewarding time. You have what it takes to play ball at the next level and I am certain that all of you will be successful. Your futures are bright ones and I thank you for letting me be part of this special ride.

Thanks,
Coach Basile
