7/3/04 – A nail bitter at the beginning. Ballston Spa won the toss but decided to take the Visitor bench. They jumped to an early lead with 3 runs scored on missed fielding by North Colonie making things tough for starting pitcher Justin Brock. North Colonie’s starting line up failed to score in the first inning and Ballston Spa came on again in the second with 2 additional runs but was soon back out of the game when North Colonie scored eight runs off Ballston Spa’s starting pitcher, mostly on walks and a nice 2 RBI double by Nick Manzella. Final Score of this one was 12 to 8.

The North Colonie 11 Year Old Cal Ripken team's season came to an end at the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament. The 11's had a great run, finishing with an overall record of 12-2, capturing the local title and the Eastern NY state title.
Each of the 12 players made meaningful contributions and it was a true team effort. I want to thank each player for their effort, dedication and desire. A thank you also to all the parents and extended families who supported the team, traveling with us throughout the Capital Region, to East Fishkill and finally to Bear, Delaware. You are all quality people. Lastly, a special thanks to the coaches - Fred Snyder, Bill Van Blarcom and Mike Egan, you made the managing job easier and I appreciate your time and devotion to the kids.
This is a great group of players with special gifts and talents. I hope that this season was a positive, learning experience for all of you. See you next year!

10 As the linescore indicates the 12 YO's finished their
All-Star season on Tuesday. The boys punched out 10 singles, w/ Evan Ashley
going 2-4 scoring a run, Chris Bogdan was 3-3 scoring twice, Brandon Risler was
2-2 scoring once and getting 2 RBIs, Anthony Pascarella had a single and RBI and
Logan Brown and Ryan Burns added hits. Brandon Risler also threw 2 1/3 solid
innings, striking out 3. As we were driving up the thruway last night after the
game we were cut off by a truck towing a boat. I jokingly said to Chris to reach
into his baseball bag and grab his bat so I could put some dents in their boat.
At that point I realized that Chris, or any of his teammates, would never be
using their Little League/Cal Ripken bats again. It was a very sad moment for
me. (*** If there is any 10-11 YO interested in a good bat give me a call***) I'd like to thank each of the boys for their efforts.
We were always the physically smaller team, but because of the 150% they always
put out we would leave the field after 6 innings w/ our opponents knowing how
big we really were. I hope all the players had FUN - that is what it s/b all
about. As always, I'd like to thank the parents for doing
everything they've done, you are tremendous. Special thanks to Coaches
Hendrickson and Ashley who have put up w/ me for 4 years. Also, I'd like to
thank Len Wnorowski for helping w/ the hitting this year, his toys were a great
help. Finally, I'd like to thank NCYBA. From the 'old guys'
(Jerry Francis, Jack Soch, Tom Conlin, Larry Wood. Tom McDonald etc.) to the
'current guys' (Frank Huttner, John Oreshan, Andy Smith, Paul/Karen McMeel,
Steve Raczynski, Bill VanBlarcom, Anita Vanwagner, etc) to the 'future guys'
(Mike Burke, John Montagne, etc) you've all been great for the program. Mr.
Babie I wasn't sure which 'group' to put you into, but words cannot tell what
you have meant to this program. Thank you all for making baseball what it is in
North Colonie. PS - Thank you Don Young for this website.

0 When you get to this point it comes down to pitching
and defense. The NC 12 YOs provided both in this extra inning game. Chris Bogdan
and Evan Ashley shut the door on any hopes the Kent boys had of advancing.
Bogdan went 4 innings no hitting the 13 batters he faced while striking out 6
and Ashley closed out the game allowing only 2 singles while striking out 1. No
Kent runner reached 3rd base. The NC boys got the winner when Tyler McMeel walked to
lead off the 7th. Logan Brown came on to pinch run and immediately went to third
on Connor Mahan's single to right . Brown easily trotted home on Ryan Burns'
single and the defense put the game in the book in the bottom of the 7th. Ashley and Mahan both had multiple hit games and
Anthony Pascarella added a single.

1 The 12 YOs took out their frustration of their first
game loss today. Offensively: Evan Ashley led the 10 hit attack with 2 singles and a
double, scoring twice and driving in 3. Brandon Risler contributed a single and
double Richie Hendrickson singled, scored twice and had 3 RBIs Connor Mahan
singled, scored twice and had an RBI Jake Langston singled and scored twice
Chris Hooks singled, scored and had an RBI Sean Murphy singled and had an RBI Chris Bogdan and Brandon Risler combined to no-hit the
opposition, striking out 4 in the process. Connor Mahan, for the THIRD time in All-Star play,
gunned down a runner from his outfield position. With runners on 1st and 2nd
Connor deeked the runner on 2nd into thinking he was going to make the catch in
the air, but caught the ball on one hop and threw to 3rd baseman Tyler McMeel
for the force. McMeel didn't even have to move his glove.

It is always tough to open a tournament playing the Host team, but the NC 12 YOs seem to always get that matchup. Our boys outhit the Beacon team 7-5, but could not get the timely hit. Evan Ashley pitched superb, striking out 6. Chris Bogdan had a double and scored on one of two Evan Ashley singles. Ryan Burns and Jake Langston also had multiple hit games.

One bad inning will kill you. With a 1-0 lead, which should have been more except for a blown umpires call, North Colonie's 12 YOs gave up 7 runs on 7 hits (2 HRs) in the 3rd inning. The boys didn't give up as they came back w/ 5 runs to make it a one run game going into the 5th, but could not push across any more.
Offensively:
-Jake Langston had 2 hits and scored twice
- Chris Bogdan had a hit and scored twice
- Ryan Burns had a hit, RBI and scored twice
- Logan Brown had a hit and 2 RBIs

The team came out on fire tonight. With a berth in the State tournament on the line, Logan Brown and Richie Hendrickson delivered. Brown's 2nd inning Grand Slam, and Hendrickson's triple with the bases juiced in the first made for a semi-relaxing game for Coach Bogdan and Hendrickson. Jake Langston was 2-3 w/ a double, 2 runs scored and a theft of home, Chris Bogdan was 2-3 w/ 2 runs scored, Ryan Burns was 1-1 w/ 2 runs scored, and Brandon Risler added a single. On the mound, Chris Hooks was solid giving up only 2 unearned runs while striking out 4 in 5 innings. The defensive gem came in the top of the first. With runners on 1st and 2nd Ballston Spa's #5 hitter singled to center, Connor Mahan fielded it cleanly and threw a strike to home cutting down the runner by 4 steps, the second time he has done this in the tournament. When will opposing teams learn you don't run on Connor Mahan.

The boys can hold their heads up after their effort against a very strong Niskayuna club. A 2-run single by Connor Mahan, and singles by Brandon Risler, Jake Langston and Anthony Pascarella were the offensive hi-lites. On the defensive side of the coin, Chris Bogdan shut down the potent Niskayuna offense for 3 innings, striking out 2.

Great defense was the key to the 12 YO's opening game victory. Tyler McMeel handled 3 chances in the first 2 innings at 3rd base flawlessly and Connor Mahan's perfect throw from right field to nail a Westland Hills runner at the plate to end the second were the hi-lites of a very solid defensive effort. Chris Bogdan and Evan Ashley pitched smartly, combining to strikeout seven. On the offensive side, Ryan Burns tripled and had 3 RBI's on the night, Chris Bogdan was 3-3 w/ a double scoring 2 runs, Evan Ashley had a single and scored, and Brandon Risler added a single.

7/17...North Colonie entered the 2nd round of the Losers Bracket with a tremendous defensive game against Twin Town. We had 2 double plays. Cody Chaszcewski and Mike Guillerm played a flawless infield along with Jon Casey covering center field and more with a couple of good catches. We used trick plays, good throws, and cutoffs to protect John Kolach's outstanding 7 innings pitched giving up 2 hits! John Kolach helped his cause by batting 3/4 with a couple of RBI's. John Kyratzis, Cody Chaszczewski, and Mike Guillerm all helped the cause with hits and RBI's. The score: NC 5-Twin Town 2.
7/17...North Colonie had to come back in the hot, humid afternoon to face Cohoes in the 3rd round of the Losers Bracket. The team was tired w/ sore arms and legs, but endured! Jck Murphy pitched 7 strong innings and helped his cause with the bat. John Kolach also stayed hot with multiple hits. John Kyratzis and Mike Guillerm also helped the cause with hits. Cody Chasczewski continued his defensive showing at third base. Much credit goes out to Jon Brochu for catching a total of 15 innings in hot and humid conditions. He blocked many pitches, had many throw downs resulting in outs and some great tags at home. He also helped the cause with his aggressiveness on the bases, and many hard hit balls. Andrew Robbins layer down the PERFECT squeeze bunt which resulted in a run. He also did a fine job in right field. Jon Casey played a fine center field directing the other outfielders and covering allot of ground. His "gun" of an arm protected us from hits being kept at a single. Jon also was affective on the base paths with a couple of steals. Matt McKillup had the role of leadoff hitter an was very affective in working the count. He also was given the roll of playing left field with a short porch where many balls were hit hard at the fence and difficult to judge. Matt was able to get the ball back to the infield. John Kyratzis has developed into a strong first basemen with a lot of range. His bat was very affective also. Mike Guillerm took a break from Lacrosse long enough to finish his Baseball career at North Colonie with a fine display of defense at second base, multiple hits, and fast base running. Mike has been with North Colonie since T Ball and states that this is it for him. Alex Messina, Andrew Klinoski, and David Ogden all played important roles for NC and practiced hard with the team. They deserve much credit for their contribution. I want to thank Ed Chaszczewski for his hard work, leadership, and baseball knowledge. I was want to thank John Kolach II for his coaching, and the ability to throw BP game after game. It was an honor to work with you guys! Also; thanks to Steve Robbins and Jim McKillup for their assistance.
This was a trying year for the 15 year olds. They were down in numbers initially losing players to other programs etc. They were not predicted to do anything in post season. They practiced and played their hearts out and provided us with great baseball. They played above their ability and were as strong as any past ALL-Star team from the past. A nod to willpower, and playing well with each other. It took Cohoes 8 innings to beat us. Cohoes 8-NC7. Season over! I have enjoyed my time working with NCYBA over the past 10 years. NCYBA has a tremendous program. A credit to the people involved whom I will miss greatly.
Thanks,
Brad
